This course offers an overview of art and visual culture in China, Korea, and Japan from ancient times to the present. It is organized in a loosely chronological sequence, with lectures presenting a variety of case studies on art objects, each addressing specific themes or concepts in East Asian art history. We will delve into topics such as the transcultural adaptations of painting themes, the cross-border movement of artifacts, women and gender representation, the unifying role of Buddhist art, diverse expressions in popular print culture, and the impacts of modernization. To enhance our understanding of the material aspects of art and the viewing experiences shaped by various formats, we will conduct replica handling sessions and organize class visits to the Musée Guimet, Musée Cernuschi, and Musée du quai Branly. This course aims to equip students with fundamental skills in formal analysis and showcase diversities and interconnectivity within East Asian art history.
